Leading Hard

Delivering a tough message and inspiring future thinking and change is no small feat, being prepared to navigate these crucial conversations is one of the most difficult tasks a leader has. It is important to remember the impact you have and the importance of guiding your team toward a brighter, more adaptive future.

As one heads into these challenging discussions, I’m reminded of the incredible story behind the Challenger Deep expedition. In 1960, two men, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh, descended nearly seven miles into the deepest part of the ocean in a tiny, experimental submersible called the Trieste. This was an unprecedented, incredibly risky mission into the unknown. They faced immense pressure, both literally and figuratively, knowing that a single structural flaw could mean instant catastrophe. Yet, they pushed through the fear and uncertainty, bravely venturing where no human had gone before. Their courage and perseverance didn’t just achieve a record-breaking dive; it opened up entirely new frontiers of scientific understanding about our planet.

Like Piccard and Walsh, you might be embarking on a journey into challenging territory. You might encounter resistance or discomfort, but just as they navigated the immense pressures of the deep, you have the vision and leadership to guide your team through this difficult but ultimately necessary period of change. As a leader you have to keep focusing on the long-term benefits, encourage open dialogue, and help everyone see the opportunities that lie ahead.

You’ve got the resolve and the wisdom to lead your team through this. I’m cheering you on!
