Looking back, I think the biggest assumption I made when I was getting started was that eventually, as I got better, the people I worked with and for would also get better.
That was an assumption.
It has made an ass out of more me than you.
It’s sort of like the movie Groundhog Day in that it’s the same nonsense on every new project…every…single…time.
Part of it is that a lot of times I’m an army of one, and the information comes in a slow not-paying-attention sort of pace…until we’ve gotten ourselves tied up in a circle of changes that only come from indecisive inexperience.
By the end, we’re usually no better off than when we started, and not eager to do it again at all.
Yes.
Some of that needs to be fixed on my end. With more paperwork and written down rules that need to be followed. I should continue to know better, and be better.
Some of it is also in the pie-eyed delusions of people who think that they don’t need experience in any specific field in order to be considered a visionary who should be blindly followed.
There’s nothing special about fad chasing.
You’re just running after the ambulance with flashing lights, like a mosquito on the way to the death ray.
And honestly, maybe that’s better. Maybe that’s where we’ll all end up in the end, is getting electrocuted by the bright lights that drew us in like sirens on the rocks.
There are constant pushes to try new gimmicks.
Gimmicks have no lasting value.
They do not resonate past the immediate glance, and are forgotten faster than a bathroom break.
For instance, everyone is pushing the ability of shooting film (as in movies) on phones these days.
‘New phone? You should shoot a movie on it.’
They say that, because they know that the odds are that you don’t know how gaffing works.
The amount of light and crew and time that it takes to actually make something like that look good.
They just want to sell you an expensive new toy.
What do you think would happen if you walked in with your fancy new “I can shoot a movie on this phone” phone to shoot a wedding ‘day of’.
There would be a wedding and a wake.
Probably closed casket.
Are you having invitations made to your wake and ritual execution?
Would you send me one?
Why do you think they would be mad, your phone…after all, is capable of shooting a movie…isn’t it?
